We have installed this forum on this website to allow people to exchange in an open discussion about the Bach48 Album, as well as all things Bach and Well-Tempered Clavier. Our concept for the album is inclusive, and we wanted to rethink what it meant to put out an album in the 21st century. Beyond the physical Bach48 Album, we wanted this Bach48 website to serve as an expansive digital album, a place to collect and share all aspects of this recording, these films, and information beyond. The word ‘album’ itself means ‘blank’, as in a blank page. The album allows us to fill this blank page with anything we want, usually inspired by a theme (in this case Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier). This is how we have conceived of this Bach48 Album. And rarely is an album fully complete! The act of filling it, of collecting bits and pieces over time, does not always have finality but is filled out progressively over time and through an accumulation of experiences that are memorialized in these ‘pages’. And thus this Bach48 website is the modern-day album equivalent of the 18th century album amicorum, which may be one person’s physical book but the work of multiple contributors (friends, colleagues, acquaintances, etc.). So this album is both inspired by this old ‘blank page’ tradition, as well as by the idea of the album as a collection of artistic work (recordings, films, images), in which there are multiple contributors. We believe that classical music needs more than ever to incorporate all the advantages of the technological and communications age in order to retain the attention of an engaged audience. We look forward to exchanging with you about this topic as we pursue this project!
