    Bach… J.S. Bach… Johann Sebastian Bach…

A name both revered and feared. Some are unconditional fans while others are left cold by the thought of him and his “mathematical” music.

Where do you position yourself within this spectrum and why?

Can the love of Bach and his music be acquired? Or is Bach love or distaste instant?

We’d love to hear from you on this divisive topic.

Dear George, thank you for posing the question. To me Bach as a man and as a musician, represents the whole range of human experience, from the heights of spiritual inspiration to the depths and pain of loss. His music reminds us that these extremes can coexist within us at every moment and that joy and sorrow are inextricably linked.

Thanks Mark for these good thoughts. I do agree with you that Bach’s music is made of emotional extremes, sometimes jarring and sometimes absolutely beautiful. And the many states within… I hope you also get to share with us your favorite pieces! Best, George
