The most common type of gematria used today is the Jewish system, which assigns numerical values to Hebrew letters. For example, the letter Aleph (א) is assigned a value of one, while the letter Beth (ב) is given a value of two. This system can then be used to calculate the numerical value of any Hebrew word or phrase. The numerical result is referred to as its “gematria value” or “gematria number”. Gematria is an ancient numerical system used to assign numerical values to words and phrases. It originated in the Jewish tradition and has been used in various forms throughout the Middle East, Europe, and North Africa. Gematria is based on the idea that words have a hidden meaning which can be revealed through numerical values assigned to each letter of a word or phrase. A cryptograph which gives, instead of the intended word, its numerical value, or a cipher produced by the permutation of letters. The term first occurs in literature in the twenty-ninth of the thirty-two hermeneutic rules of R. In some texts the rule for permutative gemaṭria is counted as a separate regulation—the thirtieth (comp. Königsberger’s edition of the rules in his “Monatsblätter für Vergangenheit und Gegenwart des Judenthums”). Waldberg (“Darke ha-Shinnuyim”), who gives a list of 147 cases of gemaṭria occurring in traditional literature, includes in this number cases of symbolical numbers, which properly belong to the twenty-seventh rule (“ke-neged”). It is not a numbers game; it designates properties, forces and degrees that the soul goes through. Variant spellings of some letters can be used to produce sets of different numbers, which can be added up or analyzed separately. Based on these definitions, the difference between numerology and gematria – in simple terms – is that gematria is the practice of assigning a numerical value to letters and words in the Hebrew alphabet to uncover hidden meanings within the text. In Jewish mysticism gematria was the study of Hebrew letters in association with numbers. Prominent words could be systematically converted into numbers and linked to other words with the same numerical value, which were then regarded as comments upon the original words. The absolute or normative value of a word is calculated by treating each letter as a word and then adding up all of the numerical equivalencies of these letter-words.
